In celebration of the Bard's birthday, I've been rereading the sonnets both in English and in the classic Russian translation by Samuil Marshak. I used to love those translations very much, but lately I've gone off them... as translations. They're lovely as poems, but for my taste they sound way too classicist for Shakespeare. Today I'm leaving for holidays and will not be back till Jan. 2. Here we don't really celebrate Christmas (and Orthodox Christmas is on January 7 anyway), so New Year is The Holiday for me. Which is why I want to wish all of you a very happy new year, full of happy days and dreams coming true.
